March 6th, 2010: Armory Celebration Party featuring Nora Herting: Free Sitting |

Like the Spice is pleased and excited to present Nora Herting:Free Sitting.
Most of us have childhood memories of assuming strange postures and smiling fakely while questionably fashioned, all for the benefit of appearing content, attractive, and harmonious in a family photograph. Nora Herting became so fascinated by the social phenomenon of these awkward and ubiquitous family portraits, that she went undercover as a trade photographer at JC Penny portrait studio. Her work, previously shown at Like the Spice in 2008's Flip, allows us to look at the strange world built on those held-too-long smiles, the world which only exists in the brief moment we say "cheese". On March 6th, Nora follows this idea in a new project, transforming the portrait studio into an architectural space, and turning the act of making the portrait into a social sculpture. ![]() Once again Nora will assume her roll as a commercial trade photographer. This time she will pose and photograph bystanders who become performers by being cast in new, fictive families for her lens. Their imaginary relationships will be immortalized in these family portraits, as they also become participants in the performance. ![]() Join us on Saturday, March 6th, from 6:30pm until 10:00pm, for a very special Armory celebration, including the fabulous one-night-only Nora Herting: Free Sitting. |
