Curating as a profession is increasingly widespread. Academic institutions are creating new degree programs for curatorial study. Artists are branching out into the curatorial world. Creative people are starting up galleries in their living rooms.
This independent curation workshop will concentrate on the process of curating without an affiliation to an arts institution. Focusing primarily on alternative venues, we will explore curating for galleries, project spaces and hosting exhibitions in your own apartment or backyard. This workshop will illustrate the process of organizing an art exhibition from beginning to end. Tracy will answer questions concerning the challenges faced when organizing independent arts events. We will also cover successful strategies for other projects of interest to participants, for example - film screenings and festivals, booking performances and music acts and hosting arts related fundraisers.
The workshop will include discussions and visits to local Williamsburg galleries, artist’s studios and alternative spaces to further explore the possibilities of independent curating.
Since 2002 Tracy Candido has been curating independent exhibitions and dynamic programs that exemplify contemporary interdisciplinary art shows. She began curating to fulfill her desire to view fine art, film, video, live music and performance artin one space. Her most recent exhibition entitled "Our Dark Heroes," was at Secret Project Robot in Williamsburg, Brooklyn February-March 2007. Currently she is a guest juror for the art exhibition associated with the RIATS FILM FEST (prev. BillyBurg film festival) to be held this June at 3rd Ward in Brooklyn.
