Announcing: 'WILLIAMSBURG EVERY SECOND' All Greater Williamsburg Galleries Inaugural Monthly Event- The Second Friday of Every Month! Please Join Us... One bang of a night: on Friday September 14th, all greater Williamsburg galleries stay open until 11pm. This is the first of our new monthly second-Fridays after hours events - Williamsburg Every Second, taking place the second Friday of every month, celebrating the dynamism of the NEW Williamsburg art scene. Sex, Booze And... Once upon a time in the 'Burg, it was the sex, booze and rock and roll-iganism of disaffected hipster youth. Plus more art than anyone really knew what to do with. And more artists than any other place at any other time in history - yada yada. It ran its course-and passion aside-we think that's a little boring. But now that money has moved in, it's a whole new game! The New Williamsburg is High-Low in action Notice all those million dollar condos? Yes, the maverick creme of New York's cutting-edge cultural elite snuck on over to escape the bland homogeneity of Manhattan's professional classes (been to a Chelsea opening lately? ...But no, not everyone is a hedge-fund hipster. This here's still where the kids pile themselves in like rats to live the artist's life-or find the deal! and some of them do. For every bar, a hundred studios. For every cafe, a dozen new collectors. Carmen Marc Valvo dress spotted on North 9th, talking to a hoodie. The new Williamsburg is a place of extremes. No better place to get your latest runway couture oh-just-a-tad-dirty! Works Now Available From $300-$100,000! The terrific surge of galleries in greater Williamsburg (the L-train corridor) astounds us. You'll need a motorcycle to see them all! Take note: this is the 5th anniversary of the WGA. Of the original 23 charter members in 2002, now only Black & White, Figureworks, Jack the Pelican, Momenta, Parker's Box and Pierogi remain. Some so-called 'golden agers' went belly up. Othere's moved to Chelsea (you use to have to do that to keep your artists happy). What is remarkable is that, despite those losses, the WGA is now nearly twice the size. 35 new quasi-professional (read: as-good-as or better than, plus regular hours) artist-run spaces have sprung up to swell the ranks. And non-member galleries now total upwards of 40. This is not the one-stop shopping of mono-culture mall-ism (complete with anchor stores). It is the cutting-edge frontier of good ol' rugged individualism. No two alike! So, where's the real action at? Truth is, nobody really knows. But rewards aplenty for those willing to do the real work of looking! Click here for the current list of exhibiting galleries For more information visit www.every2nd.org |
